Why Caesura

Built for the space between notes.

A caesura is the deliberate pause in a line of music; the silence that gives the notes on either side their meaning. We named the company after it because that’s the job we ask of every effect we make: serve the music around it.

The story

We went looking for specific sounds.

Not more sounds. Specific ones. The trail off at the end of a phrase. A harmony that moves the way a second player would. A delay that stacks on itself the way you hear it in your head.

We love a lot of what’s out there; some of our favorite records lean on other people’s boxes, and we’re glad they exist. But we kept hitting the same wall: the sound we needed was almost there, and almost isn’t a note you can play.

So we built our own. The first one was for a single session; it had to be rhythmic, locked in tight with the tempo, and it had to add that special something. Then another. Thirteen plug-ins / pedals later, each one named for the musical idea it serves, we’re ready to share them.

What we believe

Always musical.

If an effect doesn’t sit inside a song, it doesn’t ship. Every plug-in / pedal here was approved by ear, in a mix, by one person listening hard.

Boutique means the work, not the attitude.

Small-batch care in the sound design; none of the preciousness in the price or the pitch.

Inspiration over impressiveness.

The best effect is the one that makes you keep playing. If you forget you’re tweaking and start writing, we did our job.

Not a slot machine

Some effects are built like slot machines. Pull the lever, get a jackpot sound: huge, glittering, undeniable for about eight bars. Then the second verse arrives and the jackpot won’t sit in the arrangement, won’t follow the dynamics, won’t leave room for the vocal.

We tune ours the other way around. Less spectacle at the demo stage; more music at 2 a.m. when the song actually needs something. That trade is the whole company.

Achievable, on purpose

Boutique usually comes with a boutique price.

We’d rather these get used. Every plug-in is $49. Attacca, our flagship distortion, is free; keep it forever, no catch. Hardware pedals are coming at $279. Not cheap, because the work isn’t cheap; achievable, because a sound you can’t afford is just another sound you don’t have.
